While driving today, I was slowing down and was in 3rd. I went to put the car into 2nd and the gearbox would not go into second gear, it just wouldnt move and go in. When loosing all my speed I tried to put it in first, hiwever this did not go into gear either. Reverse, 3rd, 4th and 5th was able to be selected, so I reversed the car to a safe position. Howevever 1st and 2nd gear coudl not be selected, it just wouldnt physically go in. After getting fed up and waiting around 10 mins, the car finally went into first gear. Upon driving home it happened again. I have only been driving a few months, but I know it wasnt me making a mistake.

It just appears odd it is now working okay, but for some time 1st and 2nd gear could not be selected.

If you have any suggestions before I get it looked it I would be much grateful, thanks.

The fluid needs to be checked first of all.

It sounds like the syncro inside is failing. It will not get better and will eventually fail and not allow those gears

Hi, I assume you mean the handbrake fluid?

When you say syncro is that to do with gear linkage as apparently that can be a problem on the corsas.

But yes I will get this looked at, do you know the rough cost I should expect for the syncro to be done?

Many thanks for your reply though

The fluid is the gear box fluid.

The syncros are internal, not external. The cost should be between 900-1200.

Due to the cars age and miles, what would be the reason for the syncro going?

Could it not be wear to gear linkages?

Not linkage, it is internal. As I stated before, check the fluid and see if it is low, that could be the reason for the failure and also if you have never changed the fluid, that could also be the failure
