My van is leaking out so much oil that when i took it the mechanic he said i would need a seal fixed on it. i was quoted a $1,000.00 just for labor, because they said they either had to take the engine or transmission out to fix the seal. the seal only costs roughly $30.00 to $50.00. should i be paying this much in labor?

Assuming this is the rear main seal?

Depending on the shops door rate, it is not that far off. The book time says 7.8 hours so if the shops door rate is $100.00 per hour then that would be $780.00. Most shops will charge a little more then book time because on older vehicles they need to account for rusted parts or difficulty that may arise.

See the attached. Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be too far out of line (again, assuming their door rate is around $100.00 per hour).
