Gas spewed everywhere and even after I removed the nozzle?

I went to a gas station and started pumping gas and halfway through it spewed everywhere and even after I removed the nozzle it was still going and if I squeezed the notch more would trickle out. This is the second time I have been to this gas station and had this type of issue and I even used a different pump! Is there a way u can confirm that the issue is with the nozzle from this video? Also will this cause any effects to my car? Thanks

I went to the gas station today and I began pumping and it seemed fine up until I got close to 4 gallons of gas and the nozzle seemed to spurt out everywhere. I talked to the gas attendant and he told me the nozzle was previously faulty and was recently fixed. I’m concerned if this will affect my filler neck or gas tank by it spurting out like this. Any mechanic advice would help thanks a bunch! Here’s a video of what happene

Yes, I see what went wrong, the gas filler needs to be inside the filler neck, not almost out, the gas nozzle has a shut off valve in the tip of the nozzle, but you have it too far away for it to work, insert the nozzle fully into the gas fill and you should be fine.

As the other tech states above. The nozzle needs to stay fully inserted into the filler neck so the shut off valve works properly. With it half in it will not activate the shut off valve properly and will cause it to spit out and overflow.

No this is a well known faulty nozzle the gas attendant said, I always fill that way never an issue. Would gas spitting out like that afffect my gas tank in any way?

Also I’m pretty sure it was the nozzle because even after I removed it from the filler neck it still kept dripping and if I squeezed the notch it would still spit out gas so it was the nozzle from what the attendant told me. I just wanted to know if that incident with it spraying out all at once , has any long term effects on my gas tank/ filler neck or my fuel efficiency?

I'll be the third person to tell you to put the nozzle all the way in. The shut-off sensor can't do its thing when it's that far from the filler pipe. As far as damage to the vehicle, this is no different than when people like me keep trying to squeeze in a few more drops, over and over, until it overflows. The worst is the gas residue on the paint is likely to collect road dirt and show up until it's washed off.

By holding the nozzle back so far, it's the same as holding it over the ground and expecting it to not pour gas all over. Gas pumps and nozzles have different designs and run at different pressures and flow rates, so just because you don't have a problem at one pump or one station doesn't mean you'll get the same results at a different pump.

To say this a different way, If I held the nozzle out not fully inserted, I would expect gas to splash out like it did in your dandy video.

You want the nozzle to be in far enough that it is setting on the spring. With it part way out you are doing a couple things, one is preventing the nozzle from shutting off properly. However the other is why it is spewing gas out. The pump is trying to put gas into the tank, as it does that the air in the tank as well as gas fumes need a way to get out. For that your filler neck has a vent tube that goes down and through the vent system that is part of the EVAP equipment. That vent allows the vapors out while you are filling the tank. BUT, with the nozzle part way out, the pump now puts fuel into both the main fuel neck and some goes into the vent line. Now the air and vapor has no where to go and it dumps gas back out until one or the other is open to let the pressure in the tank escape. Have ever swallowed something wrong and then started coughing trying to clear it out? That is what is happening here. The pump flows fuel very fast, some blocks the vent and the system tries to cough out the excess. Put the nozzle farther in and you will prevent this.

It’s just odd because I pump the same everywhere and only seemed to have this issue at this particular gas station and the attendant even admitted that pump was faulty and just had been repaired so maybe it could have been part of why it did that, because when removing the nozzle should gas continually flow out or would that indicate the nozzle itself is faulty rather than the way I inserted it

The symptom you have is air trapped in the tank from the fuel going in. A bad nozzle wouldn't act that way, it just wouldn't shut off when you removed it from the tank. The sensor that trips the valve in the nozzle actually uses the venting gases to tell it to stop when inserted properly.

Ok so what does a continuous running nozzle indicate then? Because well after I removed it it was still dripping a lot not the typical drip

Continuous would be the same as if you were holding the lever on. Like spraying with a garden hose. The dripping you saw was due to the fuel that spit back. If you were to look inside the nozzle you would see the large opening the fuel comes out of, and a smaller port that senses the fuel vapor and is what tells the nozzle that the car is full and to shut off. Normally the smaller port doesn't have gas in it, the spray back you had would have shot fuel into the nozzle and into that tube. The fuel trying to get back out would be much more than would normally drip out. The way they operate is also why they need to be inserted fully into the fill neck on the tank. The auto shut off has to be blocked to shut off the valve in the nozzle. In your video the venturi tube is out in free air and not in the filler neck below it's vent.

Hi Steve. To add a comment of questionable value, to say it only does it at this one station or one pump is comparable to saying, "I only trip on a crack on the sidewalk at this one place. There's lots of other cracks at other places, and I don't trip on them". The fix is still to repair the crack you're tripping on, regardless of what happens or doesn't happen at other places. The fix is to stick the nozzle in fully, even though gas doesn't spit out at the other stations. There's all kinds of unknown variables. Some pumps pump slower or faster. Some might develop higher or lower pressure. You might have shifted your weight to your right foot at one station, and to your left foot at a different station! A shutoff sensor might be mispositioned slightly, but that only causes a problem when the nozzle isn't in fully.

The bottom line is it's operator error even though the symptom doesn't occur at every pump.

Yeah I just figured I’d ask because even the attendant mentioned that pump was problematic after I reported it and that’s the second pump at that station with that same issue . Seems like they’re always repairing so I’m guessing equipment is part of the issue

also it was in the filler neck up until the pressurized gas spewed out and pushed the nozzle back. Even after removing the nozzle the gas could still be pushed out through the nozzle so the shutoff might be faulty. Even the gas attendant said it was problematic at the pumps so that’s the final time I go to that station lol, it seems to happen to multiple people not just me

I understand. There have to other variables at play. If it was all only your fault, it would happen at every station and pump.

Ok that’s a relief! Because I knew it wasn’t me because I have pumped gas over 10 years all kinds of cars never had that experience lol and personally other people I know had that same exact issue only at that station so I guess it’s not properly maintained. Is the incident worth getting my car inspected or is the fuel tank fine?

There's nothing wrong with your car, and no need to have anything inspected. Fill the tank at a different station, then "buzz off peacefully into the sunset". To say that a different way, this is an annoyance, not something you need to lose sleep over.

Ok so based on the video I sent in there’s no way something like that would damage the evap sensor or tank in any way??

Correct. You're worrying about something that doesn't warrant that much concern on your part. I'd be more worried about smelling like gas if it got on my clothes. (Come to think of it; that might be an improvement).
