Does not want to start cold at all?

When it does start, I can't apply too much gas because it will start to choke and shut off and backfire in the intake.

This sounds like low fuel pressure but to be sure let's go over this guide and run the test. You can get a fuel pressure gauge test kit from the local auto parts store for cheap or free. Here is a guide to help you step by step and the instructions in the images below for your car. It could be a clogged fuel filter as well.

Fuel system pressure should be between 201-310 kPa (35-45 psi).
