Gas fill problem

2000 Mazda Protege DX Just recently when we put gas in it. We can only pump about a half a gallon and then it overfills and shuts the pump off or gas gushes out like it is full. It is not full. Then we wait about 20 seconds and start the whole thing over again. What's wrong?

I have tried different gas stations with the same result. Have pumped super slowly. Takes forever and ever. Help appreciated

there is a vent valve that should always be open. it is common for it to be stuck closed during an evap test. you can replace it your self and you can get it at a parts store.

is it a vapor canister purge valve or is called something else?

it is not the purge valve, it is the vent valve.
