My check engine light has been on for a few years and my mechanic determined that the fuel tank seal is the problem. We replaced it last year but whenever I get a full tank of gas, it smells terribly. Today I filled it and noticed it was leaking a lot of gas. It is slowed down, so I think it was just really full. I am letting the car run hoping to use up some fuel so it will not continue to leak. If it is full to around 3/4 of a tank, it is usually fine. I am just wondering if I am in any danger or if you have another opinion? Thanks!

If it is leaking you have a problem that needs to be repaired. It would only take a spark to cause a bigger problem. Plus if gas can get out, dirt, dust, and water can get in. Not what you want in the tank.

If it's the seal it needs to be reinstalled, but the problem sounds more like the fill neck or vent tube. Hard to say without seeing it.
