I have tracked a non starting issue to the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. I cannot however locate the relay in question.

It uses a fuel pump control module tucked up by the fuel tank. It does not turn the pump on/off like a relay. Instead it controls fuel pressure by rapidly pulsing the power to the pump in response to the ECMs commands. The ECM uses the sensors and fuel pressure sensor to determine the pressure needed. To test them you need a good scan tool to command the pump to certain pressures as you run the tests. You will also need to program the replacement module (if it tests faulty) so it matches the engine/vehicle.

Here is a guide to help you test the relay with diagrams below to show you the location

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

On "upper relay carrier on vehicle electrical system control module".

This is listed as "attached to the instrument panel central tube, and can not be removed without removing the instrument panel. The individual relay sockets can be removed without having to remove the relay panel".

Sorry that I cannot find a picture, and that the engineers found such an effective way to make troubleshooting a miserable experience. I knew there was a reason I do not work on VW's.

Hello, thanks for using 2CarPros.com. You are going to want to do a fuel pressure test to see what is really going on with that pump. If you have no fuel pressure, you are going to have to do some electrical testing to see if it is the relay or the pump itself.

Happy New Year!

Have a look at the attached image. Pull the relay and look at the circuit
diagram on the side of it. You will want to bridge slot 30 and 87 in the
relay socket to activate the pump.

I have a wagon 2002 month 6 I turn the key to start it and the shift light wont stay on and the car will not start. It turns over fine. The fuel pump does not turn on no whining or noise.
I checked the fuel pump and is works when I apply current to it. I have been unable to locate the relay and the dealer is unable to supply a relay that matches any I have under the dash.
I have another car exactly like it only a 2003 when I turn the key on the shift light goes on and stays on. This is the foot llight on the shift console next to the handle. I turn the key on the 2002 and it blinks on then off I also hear a click from the relay inside the console. What is causing this?
