How often should I have to replace my fuel pump? I am able to hit the gas tank and it will crank, however it has only been about four years since it was replaced.

Hi Robin,

Unfortunately, there is no expected time frame on a fuel pump because they are so subjective due to fuel quality and use.

Four years is pretty short seeing has how many never replace the pump for the life of the vehicle. Unfortunately, Chevrolet trucks are known for fuel pumps going out so I would expect to replace it more often but again, four years is suspicious.

When you replace the pump this time, because it sounds like it needs it if you can hit the tank and it starts, then I would drop the tank completely and clean it out just to make sure there is no contamination in the bottom of it. This is the main reason for a fuel pump to fail early. However, if you have not changed the filter and cleaned the injectors with a fuel system cleaner, I would recommend this as well.

The GM fuel pumps will strain to pressurize the fuel system is there are restrictions so we want to make sure they have the easiest path possible.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks
