Hello,
Chances are the float in the tank is getting stuck but it could be the gauge itself. The best thing to do is to temporarily cut the sender wire to see if the gauge goes to full or not. This will be a good indicator. Violet and black wire in the rear loom. Here is the instrument cluster wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works.
