The fuel gauge is not working on my 1987 Toyota Pickup?

Hi,

Because of the model year, I have very limited wiring schematics. However, there is a sending unit that mounts to the top of the fuel tank. First, check to see if it is still attached. See pic 1. Note: The pic shows a 4Runner, but the design is the same for both vehicles.

Basically, the sending unit in the tank is simply a rheostat that changes voltage signal based on fuel level. So, first check to see if it is connected. If it is, confirm power and ground. Make sure there are no broken wires and confirm the connection is clean, tight, and free of corrosion.

If you look at pics 2 and 3, that is what I was able to find as far as a wiring schematic. Here is a link you may find helpful:
