There are actually two filters. And if you have some mechanical abilities, you should be fine.

I am going to provide removal and install directions for both filters. All attached pictures correlate with these directions.

Filter 1
FUEL FILTER 1
NOTE:
Refer to maintenance schedules in this manual, or the Owner's Manual for recommended fuel filter replacement intervals.

Clean all debris from around filter canister (1) and canister cover.
Using a socket, rotate the fuel filter housing cover (1) counter clockwise and remove cover (1).
Remove and discard the O-ring (2).
Remove fuel filter element (1).

Here are the replacement directions. At the end of the directions, it explains how to reset the computer for the service. See picture 5 for reset.

FUEL FILTER 1

CAUTION:
Do not pre-fill the fuel filter with fuel. Severe damage to fuel system and injection system components may result.

NOTE:
The engine has a self-priming low-pressure fuel system (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery - Standard Procedure) .

NOTE:
DO NOT USE brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, or similar harsh solvents for cleaning the internal housing walls.

Ensure that the internal housing wall is clean of debris before installing a new fuel filter cartridge.
Install fuel filter element (1).
Lubricate with clean engine oil and install the new O-ring (2).

Install the fuel filter housing cover (1) and tighten to 31 NÂ m (23 ft. lbs.).

_________ Reset
Once the fuel filter maintenance has been preformed, the Fuel Filter Life monitor can be reset by:
Vehicle in RUN with engine OFF (no RPM)
Hold the right arrow (3) down to reset the monitor.

Filter 2

FUEL FILTER 2

NOTE:
Refer to maintenance schedules in this manual, or the Owner's Manual for recommended fuel filter replacement intervals.

Disconnect and isolate both of the negative battery cables.
Raise and support the vehicle (Refer to 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting/Standard Procedure) .
Clean all debris from around the secondary fuel filter area.
Open the drain and drain fuel from fuel filter.
Disconnect the water in fuel sensor wire harness connector.
Remove the fuel drain/water in fuel sensor assembly (3).
Remove and discard the O-ring (2).
Remove fuel filter element (1).

FUEL FILTER 2 install

Install the secondary fuel filter element (1) and tighten finger tight. Tighten the fuel filter an additional  turn.
Using a new O-ring seal (2), install the fuel drain/water in fuel sensor assembly (3) and securely tighten.

A combination fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator
A separate fuel pick-up, or inlet filter
An electric fuel pump
A lockring to retain pump module to tank
A soft gasket between tank flange and module
A fuel gauge sending unit (fuel level sensor)
Fuel line connection
The fuel gauge sending unit may be serviced separately. If the electrical fuel pump, primary inlet filter, fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator require service, the fuel pump module must be replaced.

I have never heard of anyone solving a running problem on a Chrysler product by replacing the fuel filter. (This is not the case for GM vehicles). I did have to replace the filter on my 1988 Grand Caravan at 190,000 miles because it started to leak, but it was running fine!

There is also a pickup sock attached to the pump in the tank, but believe it or not, when those get plugged, the engine will starve for fuel, ... When you are coasting. The lowest volume of fuel flows through the pump when you are accelerating.

Will your engine stay running if you hold your foot on the gas pedal? If it does, you have an idle issue.

If not, the first thing you need to do is figure out if you're losing fuel pressure, spark, or both. Don't be misled, like most people, by troubleshooting the first thing you find. A fast, simple test I do is to use a clip lead to connect a test light to either of the two small terminals on the back of the alternator. Set the light where you can see it from inside the truck.

Under normal operation, it should turn on for only two seconds when you turn on the ignition switch, then go back off. It will turn on again whenever the engine is rotating, (cranking or running). As soon as the engine starts, watch how the test light responds when the engine dies. If it's running out of fuel, the engine will stall and the light will go out about half a second later. If you can see that the light goes out first, then the engine stalls, suspect a problem with the crankshaft position sensor.

When the sensor fails, the engine computer turns off the Automatic Shutdown relay (ASD). The relay supplies power to the ignition coils, fuel injectors, fuel pump or pump relay, and the alternator field, which is where you have the test light connected. If the relay is turning off first, you will lose spark and fuel at the same time. That's why it's important to check for both and not get hung up on the first thing you find.

None of this applies if the engine will stay running if you hold the gas pedal down. That will happen if the battery was disconnected. Minimum throttle must be relearned so the computer knows when it must be in control of idle speed. To relearn minimum throttle, drive at highway speeds, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the brake or gas pedals. The engine computer will memorize the throttle position sensor reading. Whenever it sees that value again, it knows your foot is off the gas pedal and it must adjust idle speed.

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it to Autozone, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
Might be a different problem.

You have two, one on the fuel pump, not usually needs replacement and there is one on the inline from the fuel tank to the engine, usually located under the cab on the fuel ines. If you cant find it follow the fuel lines.

What's the symptom? Except for the diesel engines, you will never solve a running problem on a Chrysler product by replacing the fuel filter. On the newer trucks, the filter is inside the gas tank.
