Nothing, it will start right up after a short crank if there are no other problems. If it doesn't, it has other issues.

I was having problems with the engine surging during acceleration and loss of power. I suspected the fuel filter and replaced that.
Now the car will not start at all. It'll turn over, but there is no fuel pressure. Roommate listened for whirring from the fuel pump and he can hear it running. I disconnected the fuel filter to make sure nothing is blocking it.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

is the security light blinking. if it is turn the key off for 10 seconds. crank the start real quick and see if the light starts to blink. when it does leave the key on and wait for the light to go out. about 10-30 min. when it does go out, turn the key off for 10 seconds, then try to start it.

I've bought the fuel filter and the little tool to make replacing it easier. Just can't seem to figure out how to get the filter off. Do I have to remove the gas tank to get to it?

Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Disconnect the quick-connect fitting at the inlet of the fuel filter. Refer to Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar).
Disconnect the threaded fitting at the outlet of the fuel filter.
Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.

You will need a 13/16 open end wrench, a 5/8 line wrench and a good pair of pliers.

Car has been trouble free until now. All of a sudden the car will not start. I try one time and does not start, turn the key off, try again and it starts right up. I know the fuel filter has never been changed so I thought I would start there. Any other suggestions.
Thanks in advance

2003 Chevy Malibu 143000 miles

I need to know how to get the clamp off of the fuel line side of the filter, that is without breaking it off? I can get it open, but can't figure out how to get it off.

You have to use a back-up wrench to remove fuel line from filter. Then disconnect quick-connect fitting from filter and remove fuel filter from mounting bracket.

Hi there,

I would first do a scan to check for any unresolved fault codes, not all faults will trip a MIL.

Have you checked to see if the fuel pump pressure is within spec? I have seen many go bad when a car is run out of gas.

Poor performance or loss of power
slow to rev or decrease in RPMs
Low fuel pressure

Check the plugs and see what color they are. They should be tan/brown if the engine is running well, black if it is too rich, and , what you will be looking for if the fuel filter is very clogged, white.

The best way to determine is to run a fuel pressure test. But that is often just as time consuming as replacing a filter in most cars.

All you need to do is crank it while you are removing the relay. Once it stalls out, there's no more pressure in the fuel lines. (But there is still fuel, so be careful)
