I'm having a hard time finding the fuel filter location on my car. Where is it located? Any easy way to access it? Thank you.

Hi,

This vehicle doesn't have a traditional fuel filter. Instead, the system contains 3 to 5 filtering or screening devices.

1. The fuel intake filter or screen is a fine nylon mesh filter mounted on the intake side of the fuel pump. It is part of the assembly and cannot be repaired separately.

2. The filter/screen at the fuel rail port of the injectors is part of the fuel injector assembly and cannot be repaired separately.

3. The filter/screen at the fuel inlet side of the fuel pressure regulator is part of the regulator assembly and cannot be repaired separately.

4. The fuel filter assembly is located between the fuel pump and injectors. This filter may be a lifetime fuel filter located in the fuel pump assembly or an external 3-port inline filter that allows clean fuel to return to the fuel tank. A new filter may be installed for the external filter.

5. The fuel filter sock is located on the fuel pump assembly between the reservoir and the fuel tank.

Is there an issue that you are experiencing leading you to believe the fuel is restricted? I ask because if you need to replace these, it will require the removal of the fuel pump (in tank) and a few other components.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Yes, I have a p0087 code. When I turn the key I can still here the fuel pump working. At first startup, the idle is really rough, it levels out but when I start driving and giving the vehicle gas, it wants to buck and hesitate.

Hi,

Okay, that is indicating low pressure, which I believe you already know. What needs to be done is to test the pressure and see what is there. Although the pump is running, it could be weak.

Here are the directions for checking fuel pressure on your vehicle. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

Check
WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, refer to Safety Warnings in General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. See: Vehicle > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Refer to: Gasoline and Gasoline-Ethanol Fuel Systems Health and Safety Precautions See: Vehicle > Technician Safety Information > Gasoline and Gasoline-Ethanol Fuel Systems Health and Safety Precautions (General Information). See: Vehicle > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

2. Release the fuel system pressure.
Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release See: Fuel Pressure Release > Procedures > Fuel System Pressure Release (310-00A Fuel System - General Information - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS), General Procedures).

3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect See: Battery > Procedures > Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

4. Remove the engine cover.

5. Disconnect the fuel jumper tube-to-high pressure fuel pump quick release coupling.
Refer to: Quick Release Coupling See: Fuel Line Coupler > Procedures > Quick Release Coupling (310-00A Fuel System - General Information - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS), General Procedures).

6. Install the Fuel Pressure Test Kit between the fuel jumper tube and the fuel tube.
Use Special Service Tool: 310-D009 (D95L-7211-A) Fuel Pressure Test Kit.

7. NOTE: The FPDM (fuel pump driver module) electrical connector was previously disconnected to release the fuel system pressure and must be reconnected to test the fuel system pressure.

Reconnect the FPDM (fuel pump driver module) electrical connector.

8. Connect the battery ground cable.
Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect See: Battery > Procedures > Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

9. NOTE: Carry out a Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) visual inspection for fuel leaks prior to completing the fuel system pressure test.
NOTE: After completion of the fuel system pressure test, open the drain valve on the Fuel Pressure Test Kit and release any residual fuel into a suitable container prior to removing the tool.

Test the fuel system pressure to make sure it is within the specified range. For additional information, refer to Specifications.

Here are the specifications for pressure.

Fuel Pressure

Engine running - 1.5L GTDI (Low pressure side). 46.4-79.8 psi (320-550 KPa)

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. If we find the pressure is low, it's likely going to require the pump to be removed. At that point, you will be able to check the fuel pump sock and filter on the pump (which is to be a life time filter).

Take care,
Joe
