Engine burps one second with starting fluid but will not run on its own. Replaced electric fuel pump and filter, did pressure check at fuel distributor about 30psi. Cold start value spraying cone shape pattern. Warm-up relay working. Cracked open fuel line going to injectors, they squirt gas. Rotated spark distributor to maximum, car ran for 5 second before starter fluid ran out. Car still won't run on its own.

Hi,

I have very little tech info on this vehicle because of the model year. However, if you have fuel pressure, are you getting an injector pulse? Take a look through this link and see if it helps:

Let me know.

Not really helpful, what I have is mechanical fuel injection system. Jet-tronic k but thanks for your reply. If I new what pressure the cylinders injectors opened, I could check that and see if the fuel distributor was putting out the required pressure. My books don't give me that info. I will post the final findings if I ever get it to run.

Hi,

Sorry about that. I found an old technical service bulletin you may find of interest dealing with the fuel distributor. Take a look through it and see if anything helps.

SUBJECT:
REPLACING CAST-IRON CIS FUEL DISTRIBUTOR WITH LIGHT ALLOY VERSION
FOR ENGINES 100.985, 110.984/985, 117.985/986

After our inventory of cast-iron fuel distributors is exhausted, only light alloy replacements will be available.

Please note that up to model year 1979, a cast iron fuel distributor was installed in production, which, in case of repair, is replaced with a light alloy version. Starting with model year 1980, a modified light alloy fuel distributor was installed in production, which cannot be interchanged with the pre-1980 model year light alloy (spare part) fuel distributor or vice versa.

Spare Parts

Name Engine Part No. Fuel distributor 110.984 110.985 000 074 08 13 100.985 117.985/986 000 074 03 13

Note:
If rust or water is found in the CIS (continuous injection system) during repair jobs, in addition to replacing the fuel distributor, the following corrective measures must also be taken.

1. If a substantial quantity of water or rust is present, drain fuel tank and check strainer in tank.

2. Remove and drain the fuel accumulator and blow out with compressed air or replace (see Service Information 07.3/21).

3. Replace fuel filter and install new corrosion resistant suction damper in front of fuel pump (in production since October 1978).

4. Replace cast-iron fuel distributor with light alloy version.

5. Replace fuel pressure damper (located between fuel distributor and warm-up enrichment compensator) and fuel line with fitting, new part No. 000 074 4886 (in production since 1980 M.Y.).

6. Blow out the fuel lines with compressed air.

7. Before operating the engine, fill one or two quarts of ethyl-alcohol ("dry gas" etc.) Into the empty tank, then refill with clean fuel.

8. Check primary system and control pressures. If control pressure is excessively high, replace warm-up enrichment compensator.

Thanks again for the reply, the information you provided gave me another path to look into. My fuel distributor is the cast iron version, and sitting in my garage for the past 15 years, gives rust a good chance of forming. I have all the info for ordering a rebuild kit if this is the case. The above investigation will take time to verify. I will post my finding when finally running.
