I bought some off of amazon to replace the fronts but they came longer. Is it common for people to install shorter ones like the ones on the truck now?

It can be if they installed lowering springs on it as well. If it's a stock suspension then it isn't common but it also depends on the company. ReFlex is a common Monroe name and those look like the current ones sold. However if the new ones fit and allow full travel, they may be fine.
