Front end grinding not the brakes

Front wheels don't engage bad grinding in front end transfer case not engaged could this be the axels or worst is it possible to change over front end to just rear wheel drive set up and how would I do so

Check axle for metal in it by draing oil then replacing it. It can be axle shaft or axle unit itself. It's not worth the cost to turn yours into a 2wd truck just remove driveshaft.
