It appeared to me my front wheels were shifting three quarters of an inch back and forth. I took it to a garage and they told me that was not possibles. Is that correct?

Forward and rearward or in and out toward the engine?
It is possible for it to move forward and rearward if a ball joint is worn, lower control arm bushing worn, loose strut bolts, etc.
In and out if worn CV-joints, etc.
