Front axle noise and replacements?

The mechanic says the front right half-shaft inner joint is loose on the stub shaft. And that the stub shaft is only available as part of the whole axle assembly. Is that true? Or can you install that without a whole new axle? $5,000.00.

Axle Assembly, R&R One Side 1.2 at shop rate.
Both Sides 2.0 at shop rate.
