fron end shaking and loud popping whne you let off the gas.

Hi, I have a 78' Chevy Nova (automatic) & just today when I started to accelerate over 40 mph it started shaking really bad & is making a popping sound once you let off the gas. Any idea what this could be?

check ignition components then sort out 1 cylinder at a time to see what one it is once you have it figured out which cylinder is doing it take valve cover off and see if cam is opening valve or a bad pushrod etc.
