Freeze Plug installation?

Well, on my car listed above i have a freeze plug that needs replacing. My question is, that instead of pulling the transmission and subframe as one, is it possible to just disconnect the transmission and pull it back just enough to put that freeze plug in that's right by the flywheel and torque converter?

Not really, you need kind of a straight shot at the freeze plug to install a new unit. They do make a tool that can help but I don't think you can get enough room to use it. please check the images below to see what I mean. You might try heating the area up using a propane torch and then cool the freeze plug down, which can help with the installation.

Hi,

That is a very good question. I've always pulled the unit. However, you could loosen the transmission and hopefully get enough room. The only thing is to make sure both the engine and transmission are supported.

Also, a standard freeze plug will require being tapped in with a hammer. If access is limited (and I suspect, it will be) they make a rubber one that you tighten with a nut on the freeze plug. That may be what you need. It will be much easier getting a flat box end wrench in there to tighten the bolt than using a hammer. It's just a thought. I attached a pic below showing what I'm referring to.
