2003 Ford Windstar Transmission won't go in gear

My Windstar had been running fine still starts fine but when you put it in gear it does not engage. I have checked the linkage and have changed the filter and fluid. could it be a sensor that has gone out?

Did it happen all at once or has it been going bad for some time? Have you checked the trans control module (TCM)?
