My friends windstar just died on him while driving ,and would not start. He towed it home and the next day I used my ob2 reader and retrieved 1- po171 then 2- po401 and 3-po174.I checked air filter it was very dirty then replaced it . Next I checked the plugs they were very fouled with a light brown chalky hard build up,then replaced them.Next I checked fuel filter after relieving the pressure their wasn't hardly any at all,the filter after tipping it alot of black dirt came out the inlet side along with a good stream of fuel about 10% of that amount came out the outlet side. So I replaced it .Then I checked the Thermostat It barely opened after put it on the stove in a pot of water at 195 degrees. Then We tried to start it but it wouldn't start so we charged the battery and tried again 'but no luck. So I checked the fuel shut off switch in the right rear and it was not tripped .so I checked and their was no fuel pressure. I would appreiciate any input before I Go ahead and change the 400 dollar fuel pump.Also we put a little gas into the throttle body and it ran until we stepped on the gas it bogged out and died and wouldn't start . So we tried again and didn't step on the gas it ran for about 10seconds then died.
