2000 Ford Windstar heater repair

Heater blows cold air. I was told by mechanic that core needed to be replaced, but ford only sells core as part of entire heating unit at about $500 plus $700 labor. Thermostat and antifreeze ok. Please help

Mode door actuator was replaced, but heater case is cracked. Said ford only sells entire unit. They epoxied case, said that might not work. It worked for a couple months.
