Hi:
A bad head gasket can do a few different things. If can leak coolant out of the engine, into the engine oil, into the combustion chamber, or just cause a loss of compression and an engine miss. There really is no way to tell if it will go bad.
What smell are you noticeing? Does it come from the engine compartment or the exhaust? Also, is there any white smoke from the exhaust? How is the engine running?
