My Windstar has recently started having transmission problems. Starts off in 1st gear just fine, but does not want to go into 2nd gear. At the same time my speedometer will not register any speed at all. I don't feel any slippage in the transmission. Almost feels like the transmission is not getting a signal to shift into the next gear. Today at the same time I had problems with the gear changing my "Service Engine Soon" light came on as well.

Once it does engage the 2nd gear the speedometer works fine and I typically don't have any more problems until I stop and turn off the engine.
Transmission shop told me they believe it's a leaky seal in the transmission that would require a rebuild. Could this be an electronic problem instead?

Hi perkinsfmly,

Thank you for the donation.

When the speedometer is not working, the transmission shifting would be affected and that can trigger the SES light to come on.

Get a free scan done at Autozone and let me know the exact trouble code so we can proceed from there.

I ended up taking it by the Ford dealership to have them look at it. Turned out to be a speed sensor. $45 part -- kabillions in labor.

Thanks for your help.
