How do i remove the front ball joint? Thick wide metal

I think the ball joints on a Windstar are part of the lower control arm. I know the late model Windstars had this set-up. I'm trying to remember the early model set-up. Can you describe what the lower arm looks like? Is it thick wide metal, or round spindles forming a "y"?
