Air Conditioning problem

I have a 98 widstar and I am having the same problem as patty with her 96 windstar, the front air only comes through the defrost vent on all of the settings. My windstar also has rear air/heat and it kinda has a mind of its own, it usually only blows heat, but occasionly when i mess with the rear switch it will blow cold for a few minutes and then it goes back to heat.... what could be my problem?
