Hi!
I have a 1996 Windstar GL 3.8L with 197,000 km (122,400 miles).
When proceeding from a complete stop my van won't go into 2nd gear unless I'm higher then 3,000 RPM. When it finally goes into 2nd gear the entire car shakes, it's NOT a smooth transmission. It seems like the van is struggling to go into 2nd gear. Before it would switch at 2,000 RPM. Going from 2nd to 3rd to 4th is ok. And when idle the RPMs are fine.
Can someone please explain what I can do to gear into 2nd without the shudder and below 3,000 RPMs?

thanks!

Doesn't sound good, I'd take it to a locally-owned reliable trans shop for diagnosis, both electrical and mechanical. If the vehicle is shuddering between shifts, could be any of a number of things. Maybe a fluid change, but I'm not big on fluid changes actually fixing issues, by then it's too late. Trans can go out at any time, especially Fords with older ax4s and ax4n, rebuilts are updated with better parts, good luck and hope it's minor.
