iI have a 1999 ford f150 4x4 when i put it in 4 wheel drive it lights up on the dash but it does not put the truck in 4 wheel drive what could be wrong with it

Have you checked for vacuum leaks to the front differential? Can you hear the actuator engage on the transfer case?
