2002 Ford Thunderbird V8 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 5000 miles

since purchased four years ago, car sets for long periods - probably only driven 10 times total - Ford
says it needs new battery - OK - but they say it needs new FUEL PUMP...how? if it's hardly ever been
driven?
