I have a 93 thunderbird with a 3.8 motor with approx 125,000 miles. It's hard to start. Have to keep my foot on the pedal then let it high idle for a few seconds. When it starts there's a lot of smoke and you can smell gas. Lately it occasionally stalls when at a stop sign. Any suggestions where to start would be appreciated.

Is the smoke white and coming from the exhaust?
