It Depends where you live. In most states you have to call the police {whoever is in the area} Have them record it as a abandend vehicle. They make a report and most of the time it usaually is about 10 days after it is reported It can be removed or one can put in for a registration for it. {I don't remember if in 1970s they had titles} You have to make a template of the vin number. You do this by taking a piece of clear paper and with a pencil gentle rub it over the paper as you hold it on the vin plate. Take this to motor vehicle with a copy of the report from the police and you should not have a problem. I dealt in law enforcement for 21 years and thats how it works here in ny
