Well, i spent some time listening to my engine knock problem and it sounds like its coming from the belts. Could it maybe be the bearings in the compressor or alternator? It's not that loud and i comes from the left side of the engine where my belts are. if it was lift knock it would be louder right? 1986 Ford Tempo 73,000 miles. I will probably take it to the shop soon but i just wanted to know what i could be prepared for.

to find out what is making the sound you could get a noise stethascope. it looks like what the doctors use but has a rod on the end . when you put it on something you can hear if the bearing are going in the altinator or a/c compressor. you can also use a piece of garden hose. little less reliable but it works. also check the tensioner pulley.
