battery ok, terminals ok, new starter, but sometimes car will not start, only hum, solenoid clicks.
When it will not start, I hit shift lever thumb switch several times (hard). It will then start ok.
When I park car, moving shift lever to park position as required, it may or may not start next time.
Banging shift lever thumb switch several times will then cause car to start normally.
Is a nuisance. Tell me how to fix this please.

Sounds liek you may need to adjust your neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the trans where the shift cable attaches.Ther should be 2-13mm bolts holding it on, loosen these bolts and move the switch a small amount to see if it fixes it, if not you may need to replace it altogether
