Hi I have a 1994 Ford Tempo 2.3GL, automatic. It has an intermittent stalling problem, wherebye the engine just cuts out completely at random. I have to pull over to the side of the road and the car USUALLY starts again first time but on occasions you have to leave it for a few minutes before it will re-start again. It happens both at slow speeds or on the highway. Sometimes when on the highway, the tachometer will drop to 0 and the engine stumbles only to restart itself again.

There is also a 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' light displayed most of the time, although this sometimes switches off at random.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Your first step would be to find out what codes the SES light is giving- that'll give you valuable information about what is wrong. AutoZone and a couple other chain outlets offer free check engine light testing. What they'll do is hook up a meter to the engine computer and it will give certain codes. You can then use those codes to find the problem. Note that the codes don't say what the problem is, only the symptoms caused by the problem.

After you have the codes, then you can start figuring out what the problem is. My '91 Tempo likes to quit when shifting from P to R and D when its not fully warmed up.
