1994 Ford Tempo 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

We recently started having issues with our 1994 Ford Tempo. About two weeks ago it was being driven home and it sputtered and died on the side of the road, after trying to start it, it would stay on for a few seconds and then die again. We ended up towing it. It died a few times in between then and this weekend but it would always start running again after a few hours. This past weekend it completely died after it began to idle extremely high, the spark plugs and wires were replaced and the car starts right up. However, it is still idling very high, the car is almost self propelled it seems as I didnt have to apply a lot of pressure to the gas to get it home. When the break is used, the car seems to want to die a little. When the car was shifted from drive to park, it began idling higher. I am at a loss at the moment because I am not a mechanic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the throttle cable from the throttle body, will it idle normally? Operate the throttle by hand, will it return to normal idle? If yes, the cable is in need of replacement. Also, get a can of spray TBI cleaner, you may have some carbon holing the idle air control valve open, it's bolted to the throttle body.

IAC valve could cause idle problems. any loose, broken vacuum hose could cause high idle also. fuel pump problems could cause stalling/no start. you need a fuel pressure test. or pull filter and put end into jar/can should be steady fat stream. if it dribbles/sputters or hesitates suspect bad/weak pump.
