Like most people, I can't afford to take it to the shop. Any ideas where to start? EGR, Oxy senser?
Thanks in advanced Jeff.
Before replacing more parts, scan the EEC-IV system for the exact three-digit trouble codes when the service engine light is on. Use an inexpensive scan tool or have an auto parts store read the codes, then diagnose from those codes. A shop manual can help with DIY repairs.
The owner of a 1993 Ford Tempo 2.3L reports intermittent black smoke, misfiring, and a rich-running condition, with the service engine light coming on during the episodes. The car sometimes runs normally afterward. An idle speed valve and mass airflow sensor were already replaced for an earlier idle problem. The expert advises against guessing at parts such as the EGR or oxygen sensor and recommends reading the exact EEC-IV trouble codes first with a scan tool or a free parts-store scan.
