You will need to pull codes to find a starting point as to what caused the check engine light to come on. And to do this you can either purchase an OBD1 Code Reader at your local parts store for about $40 or if you have a multimeter you can pull codes. Below is how to hook up multimeter to pull codes.....
Ford displays Hard Codes first then displays a single separator flash before displaying Memory Codes. Disregard any quick flashes preceding the code sequence that may occur.
"Â The fault code will either be 2 digit (up to 99) or 3 digit (up to 999).
"Â Each series of flashes represents a digit.

"Â A 2 second pause separates each digit.
"Â A 4 second pause separates each code.
"Â Each fault code is repeated 2 times before next code is displayed.
"Â Ignore any quick flashes that may occur before both Hard Codes and Memory Codes.
