1993 Ford Tempo check oil light stays on

My check oil light stays on even though the oil level is fine. There is a tapping sound in the engine. I can drive for a short distance and then the car responds with resistance. I pull over, turn off the engine, and then restart the engine. I can then drive for a short distance again.

Tapping noise -Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge the oil pump could be on its way out-
