Replaced vehicle speed sensor and still am experiencing the same symptoms, no speedometer and no transmission shift, but now, I've realized that the problem seems to occur when the vehicle has been warmed up, could there be a problem with the speedometer driven gear which I think is located in the transmission? or could the speedometer cable end where it fits into the speed sensor be rounded and not driving the speedometer head ? although that seems to be an impossibility since the speedometer does work intermittently and after all the sensor is still not signaling the transmission to shift. the installation of the speed sensor went perfectly so I cannot understand what else it could be, unless the new speed sensor has malfunctioned already what do you think ? Please help.

Discussion summary

1993 ford tempo 4 cyl.

The poster drives a 1993 Ford Tempo (4‑cyl) that intermittently will not shift gears and the speedometer stops working, though it sometimes operates normally. The poster replaced the vehicle speed sensor but the speedometer and transmission still fail intermittently; the poster now notes the fault tends to occur once the vehicle is warmed and suggests possible issues with the speedometer drive gear or the sensor/cable fit.

Reported outcome: The poster replaced the vehicle speed sensor but still has intermittent loss of the speedometer and of transmission shifting; the problem now appears to occur after the vehicle warms up. No final resolution was reported by the poster.
