My 1992 Ford Tempo makes a loud, snarly rattle from somewhere underneath in the rear. This happens whenever I step on the gas at speeds under 40mph. As soon as I take my foot off the gas it goes away. Could there be a heat shield loose under the exhaust system? Is this kind of thing expensive to repair? I have been just living with it, but it's driving me nuts.

If it's a heat shield, not expensive they make large clamps to go around converters, If the bed of the converter broke up that's another story. Use a rubber mallet and bang on the cat, The one under the car not the pet! see if the cat is OK!
