Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Ford Tempo 4 cyl Automatic

I have a 1992 Ford Tempo GL. I am having problems getting it started. When I try and start it, it will crank once and then make a humming noise or just won't crank at all. Could you please tell me what the problem may be and also could you tell me what the warning signs are that my timing may be off? Thank you for your time. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Did you solve your problem/sounds like your starter drive is shot. It's the 10 tooth gear and 1 way clutch on the starter. The gear assmbly is actually replaceable. But most of the new fangled auto stores dont handle it any more. The other thing it could be is the starter selinoid. When this fails your starter will spin but not engage the engine which is similar to the gear clutch slipping. Both result in humming/whining noise. Your car has 2 possible starters. The new small permanent magnet design and the old all electric magnet design. Getting a used starter from the scrapyard is the cheapest way to go if you can do it yourself.
