Engine Cooling problem
1989 Ford Tempo 4 cyl Automatic

Something causing fan motor not to turn on when it should which causes car to heat up and shut off. After waitn couple minutes then car turns back on & fan motor kicks on, but have had car turn off while driving as well. I have changed fan temperature switch, the fan motor relay, the engine coolant temperature sensor, the cooling fan controller & have changed the radiator cap as well. Before doing all the above, the car was worse, it would shut off when slowing down, at complete stops & I would have to wait up to 15-20 mins. To turn back on but now only 2-3 mins, but still fan not turning on when it should & still heating up. I also notice problem on freeway, long distances. Anything else u can recommend.

Remove thermostat and reassemble. Operate car without thermostat! See if that cures your heat problems. It worked for me! You can also rig fan to run all the time car is on! Or make a manual switch to operate fan at command. Also check to make sure water pump belt is snug and not slipping! Sometimes on older cars the idler/adjust pulley freezes up and wears belt so it slips.
