My car has developed a leak in the front end. I took it to my mechanic and he told me that the pan gasket is rotted out. But to repair it he will have to drop the engine and it will take a full day and about $1000.00 to repair. his hour rate is $80.00

This seems very strange to me. I owned a service station about 30 years ago and I never heard of this before. I know the car is old and I do not doubt the
gasket is rotted but I cannot afford another car as I am on pension.
