I always start by checking hoses. Even if your check-engine light sets a code, make sure your hoses are all good, especially your PCV hoses. If you have a bad hose, it can trick your computer into thinking something else is wrong, thereby causing you to replace a bunch of unnecessary parts. Unfortunately, many professional mechanics also make this mistake.
Once you're sure that all hoses are good, then you can look at spark plug wires, fuel pressure, etc.
