Engine change effect on ECM

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus (3.0L) that I just put a different engine in. The engine is the same type as one that came out of the car and runs fine. The service engine soon light is on and the OBDII scanner says it can not establish communications with the car. Is this a problem with the ECM not matching the engine? I understand some vehicles require a new control module whenever an engine is changed.

The pcm and the engine emission control system must be calibrated to work together, the newer engine has to have the same emission control system as the other,, it's not a question of just replacing the pcm because of a different engine, find the calibration number of the replacement motor and you can then ascertain if your pcm will work with it.. car may seem to be running fine, but not 100% correctly..
