Start with the throttle position sensor. It is similar to the volume knob on your stereo. You can test it by measuring the voltage between two adjacent wires. The voltage should range from zero to about 5 volts when you open/close the throttle slowly. If the voltage is smooth and gradual, then that's not the problem.
The next thing to look at is the MAF (mass airflow sensor). It is on the boot connected to the throttle body. Unplug it, and see if it gets worse. That's not a scientific test, but if it doesn't get any worse, then I would strongly suspect it.
