I get a high pitch squeaking sound around the rear portion of the cylinders [opposite the belt]. The sound is more pronounced when the engine is cold and dwindles down to a rythmic 'bird squeak' once the car is warmed up. I do not feel the car run any more rough since sqeaking started. The squeak is quite loud in some instances of cold [morning] starts and is less so when the car is re-started throughout the day. Along with the sqeak, I can detect a less prominent, metallic clicking. The clicking/squealing frequency changes in concert with the engine rpm and does seem to quiet down a bit a higher rpms.

What do you have for engine?
Some ford water pump is in the area where you described and if so would suspect and check water pump

I have a v6 engine. The water pump is on the passenger side of the transverse engine. The noise is eminating from the opposite end of the engine near the back of the engine on the transmission side. An mechanic acquaintance suggested a sensor [inserted in the area where the distrubutor used to be located. What?] May be the culprit but I cannot tell where the noise is really eminating from. Can you offer any further advice?
Thank you!

very possible the Camshaft Synchronizer to be at fault
remove two cam sensor screws and and sensor
if sensor OK
you can use penetrating oil or an engine oil and put few drops inside the synchronizer
if noises stop synchronizer bad and need replacement
