2006 Ford Taurus Loud clanky noice

when I start my car up, this loud clanky noise (like a bolt in a fan) sounds off and it is getting progressively louder. However, when I turn my AC on (which blows hot air now) the noise stops. When I turn the AC off, the noise starts up again.

Can you tell me what it is?

sounds like an ac clutch... have your compressor replaced.
