2005 Ford Taurus what is it?

i was driving down the highway and had the cruise control set. i took it off and passed a vehicle. then i tried setting back the cruise control and accelerated, it wouldnt. the transmission wont get any gears. my car no longer runs. i know HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION, but what inside the transmission, can it be? i doo a little mechanic myself but nothing that i have checked, is the problem.
